This is a wonderful recipe that I found in a book called “Traditional puddings and desserts” by Mary Berry. As the name suggests, the books has all these really gorgeous, old fashioned classic recipes that we always love…..
the old English trifle, crème brûlée, zabaglione, lemon soufflé, gooseberry fool, banoffi pie, apple cobbler etc, etc…………….
Its a wonderful book with all these amazing photographs and really well written recipes and sometimes, step by step photographs too. I just love it !
While I was going through the book, in-between steamed puddings & trifles and cobblers, there was this recipe - a chocolate délice. I read it once, and then again. I was sure I was missing something here. There was nothing to it at all. It was too simple to be true.
I had to try it immediately, and; I did . Here’s the result.
Ingredients
- 125 gms fresh brown breadcrumbs
- 90 gms demerara sugar
- 75 gms drinking chocolate powder
- 2 tbsp instant coffee
- 300 ml double cream
- 150 ml single cream
- 60 gms plain dark chocolate grated
Method
- In a bowl, mix together the breadcrumbs, sugar, drinking chocolate & coffee granules. In another bowl, whip the creams together until they form soft peaks.
- Spoon half the cream into 6 glass serving dishes.Cover with the breadcrumb mixture and then with the remaining cream. Chill for at least 6 hours, or overnight for best results.
- Sprinkle generously with the grated chocolate just before serving.
Notes / Variations
1 . To make grating chocolate easy, chill it well the refrigerator before you grate it, and use the largest holes on the grater.
2 .It’s a great dessert to make when you are rushed for time or have to make one unexpectedly. All the ingredients are stuff that we have at home all the time !! No running out at the last minute for some fancy ingredients.
&
3 . For the bread crumbs, I just cut off the corners of the bread slices & gave them a good blitz in the mixer.
4 . I have used one large serving bowl here instead of smaller individual serving bowls.
5 .And the best part ! Everyone loved it !!!
